A Texas man is dead after trying to cross the freeway on his own without looking out for traffic.
According to preliminary information from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, just before 2:30pm on Saturday, August 5th, 75-year old James Smith was in his pickup travel trailer going eastbound on Interstate 90 on the east side of Gillette, when the left rear tire came off of the axle.
Smith parked his vehicle on the right shoulder of the freeway, and he exited his vehicle to cross the travel lanes to retrieve the tire.
At the same time, an eastbound motor-home had merged into the passing lane, to go around Smith’s vehicle.
When the driver of the motor-home saw Smith, he veered his vehicle off to the left to avoid a collision, but the attempt was unsuccessful and the right side of the motor-home hit Smith.
Three people inside the motor-home were not injured, and the Patrol says road conditions were wet and it was raining at the time.
