On July 23, Governor Mark Gordon, along with Holly Krutka, UW School of Energy; Scott Stults, superintendent at SCSD#2; Dr. Walt Tribley, President of Sheridan College; and Michelle Wilson, EMIT Technologies, held a town hall meeting at Sheridan College.
In his opening remarks, Governor Gordon had this to say about the objective of the town hall.
A large crowd attended the event, and one young man, Nash Billings, led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Governor Gordon presented Billings with a token of his appreciation.
One of the topics that Gordon talked about was Wyoming’s Boom and Bust energy cycle, and how Wyoming can innovate with other industries.
He added that it was hard on Wyoming’s energy development during that time, but it had to be done.
On the topic of Sheridan County innovation, there was a comment from the floor from Susan Grant is the executive director of Phorge, Makerspace, Inc., at 1205 Broadway, a 3-D design company in Sheridan.
Phorge Workspace is a place where people with shared interests can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge. People with very diverse interests share the space, including those who are interested in sewing, rocketry, fabrication, 3d printing, coding, woodworking, soap-making, and more. They also prepare those workers and students who need the critical 21st century skills in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Grant said that they have a great partnership with Sheridan College, as well as home schooled students in the area.
Along with innovative businesses in the Sheridan area, the panel also discussed education with Scott Stults and Dr. Walt Tribley, as well as the energy industry, which is still an important part of Wyoming’s economy. Holly Krutka, UW School of Energy, and Michelle Wilson, EMIT Technologies, talked about the energy sector. Coal, coal bed methane, and carbon sequestration were discussed, but those will be other stories posted on this website.
