National Teen Driving Safety Week, this year Oct. 20-26. Captain of the Sheridan Police Department, Tom Ringley, said this is a great time for parents to sit down with their teen drivers and review the rules of the road.
Ringley said as teens first take to the roadways it is the best time to instill good driving habits.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, a teen’s inexperience behind the wheel makes them more susceptible to crashes. Specific risk factors for teens behind the wheel include: alcohol and drug use, not wearing a seat belt, distracted driving, additional passengers, speeding, and drowsy driving.
Ringley said having a discussion regarding these dangers is important when teen’s first get behind the wheel.

The SPD presents a Traffic Safety Class in which all drivers including new drivers and soon to be licensed drivers are welcome.
SPD conducts the traffic safety class, which is open to the public, and available for local courts to use as a sentencing referral option. The class is offered free of charge to those attending, and consists of four sessions that last approximately two hours each.
Ringley said the class is good for everyone, not just teens. Those interested are welcome to contact Detective Aaron Hartman at (307)672-2413.
