Wyoming Game and Fish Public Information Specialist Christina Schmidt made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse and spoke on the new licence plate that will help fund conservation efforts in Wyoming.

Through the Wyoming Department of Transportation, Schmidt said the first wildlife conservation specialty plate was offered in 2019 after the 2018 Wyoming legislature developed the program.

The conservation plates cost $180 with $150 of the fee going directly into the wildlife conservation efforts. Each year will require a $50 renewal fee.

Proceeds from the plates go into a special fund and is combined with other funding sources such as grants, contributions from the Game and Fish Commission, conservation organizations and others to help fund projects around the state.

Funding from these proceeds was recently used this past spring, with the purchase and construction of a high fence along Interstate 25 completed north of Kaycee. The fence runs approximately 18 miles north from the town along both sides of the interstate, funneling big game into multiple existing underpasses for safe road crossing.

To support wildlife crossing projects without purchasing a plate, people can donate through WYDOT or when you purchase a hunting or fishing license at a Game and Fish office or license selling agent. In 2020, the first year the donation option was offered, hunters and anglers donated $30,647. The next year, that amount more than doubled to $77,820.
