Wyoming Highway Patrol Lieutenant Erik Jorgensen is advising the public to make an effort to keep fuel tanks at least half full and electric vehicles should reevaluate travel distances in the recent bitter cold temperatures.
The Lieutenant told listeners of Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse that with the extreme cold temperatures it is wise to keep blankets and extra clothes in their vehicles. Jorgensen said the WHP has responded to a high number of cars that have run off the roadways this year. Although he said that many of the accidents resulted in very little damage due to the higher snow volume, he is concerned someone – for any number of reasons– may be waiting on the side of the road for too long.
The WHP is recommending that fuel tanks remain at least half full and that electric cars reevaluate the distance they intended to travel as the cold temps can quickly drain batteries.

Jorgensen also recommends storing an extra or travel battery for mobile devices in the glove box and to check the charge regularly. On cold nights take the battery indoors and be sure to place it back in the glove box before departure.
