The Sheridan College Jazz Ensemble will present JAZZ @ SC, a free concert, on Thursday, March 13, at 7 p.m. in Kinnison Hall at the Whitney Center for the Arts.

Under the direction of Dr. Eric Richards, the ensemble will perform a dynamic selection of classic, Dixieland, and contemporary jazz, offering something for every jazz enthusiast. The program will feature “Back Online,” a swinging shuffle by Greg Yasinitsky; “Sofrito,” an energetic Latin tune; and a contemporary funk arrangement of the folk song “Frankie & Johnny” by Dr. Richards. Each piece showcases the versatility and talent of the ensemble, highlighting a range of styles from traditional swing to modern jazz fusion.

A special highlight of the evening is a musical journey to New Orleans, featuring The Kinnison Hall Stompers, Sheridan College’s own Dixieland band. This performance will transport audiences to the heart of the birthplace of jazz, celebrating the upbeat and improvisational spirit of the genre. This septet will bring the vibrant energy of Dixieland to the Kinnison Hall Stage.

Adding to the evening’s musical diversity, Amanda Allyn, SC adjunct instructor of voice, will join the ensemble for two classic jazz standards. Allyn will lend her elegant vocal stylings to “My Funny Valentine”, a timeless ballad, and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” a swing-era favorite.

“The Sheridan College Jazz Ensemble has been working hard and is ready to present a program filled with blues, swing, funk, and standards from the Great American Songbook for our community,” Richards said. “The evening will take audiences on a musical journey to New Orleans, and we’re looking forward to celebrating America’s ‘classical music’—jazz! We hope the audience enjoys the energy, emotion, and storytelling that jazz brings to life on stage.”
