The Wyoming Legislature, during their general session earlier this year, approved House Bill 172, “Repeal of Gun Free Zones and Preemption Amendments.” In late February, Governor Mark Gordon allowed the bill to go into law without his signature. At the recent Sheridan City Council study session, Sheridan Police Chief Travis Koltiska discussed the law that will go into effect July 1.

Chief Koltiska said that private property owners will still be able to restrict firearms on their property and that there are locations statutorily where individuals cannot carry firearms, which include jails, courthouses, law enforcement centers, and state penal institutions. City Human Resources Director Heather Doke talked about how the new law will affect the City’s employee handbook.

House Bill 172 also stipulates that any person that knowingly prohibits entry to an individual carrying a concealed weapon into a place where concealed carry is authorized may be charged with a misdemeanor offense.
