A semi-truck driver sustained only minor injuries after crashing his vehicle while descending a steep portion of a highway, on the western face of the Bighorn Mountains.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, at around 2:30am on Tuesday, July 22nd, the truck driver was traveling west towards the town of Lovell, on US Highway 14A near milepost 71.

At some point, the driver entered a curve at a speed greater than 35 miles per hour, which is the advised speed for the area.

The driver overcorrected, rolled the truck on its passenger side, causing it to slide on a jersey barrier and go over the edge of the hillside barrier.

As a precaution, the Highway Patrol closed the highway from the Big Horn County/Sheridan County border line at Devils Canyon Road, to the Five Springs Campground Area, located at the bottom of the west face of the mountain, where the highway levels out.

The highway was reopened at around 4pm.

The portion of the highway where the incident took place is a 10% grade, and if you are traveling westward, there are 2 brake check turnout areas within 7 miles before the incident location.

There are also 3 runaway vehicle ramps in the area, including 1 about 3-quarters of a mile before the scene, and 1 about 1-half mile past the scene.

According to WYDOT, last week a motorhome caught fire while coming down the mountain, because the driver was riding the brakes, and they overheated.

No injuries were reported.
