The SCSD#2 Board of Trustees met Monday night, August 4. Two trustees joined the meeting via zoom. Superintendent Scott Stults talked about the back-to-school timeline, with staff and new teachers having several workdays before the students return to school on August 26.

He added that he hoped the board members would attend the back-to-school lunch as well. Stults also acknowledged that several of the principals of the SCSD#2 Schools attended the meeting.

One community member, Melinda Abbott, commented to the board that she felt they should recognize and honor more of the support staff at the schools.

The board recessed into a public hearing on policy CKA, concealed firearms. Melinda Abbott also spoke to the board about the issue.

Stults gave some background on developing a rule as opposed to a policy, saying there is a 45 day period between first and second reading, the public had 45 days to comment on the policy as well. He said there was one comment via the internet on the proposed policy,

He added that during the public comment section at the July board meeting no one commented on policy CKA. He also talked about the upcoming firearms training.

School board trustee Doug Moore suggested an amendment to the policy, exempting the cost of the lockbox from the employee and volunteers training costs. The policy, with the amendment, was approved on second reading.

The board also considered a request for the removal of three books, Court of Winds and Ruin; Court of Frost and Sunlight and Court of Silver Flame, by author Sarah J. Maas, as some felt the material in the books was too adult in nature and that the books should not be in the school library, and taxpayer funds should not be used to purchase them.

The board voted to remove one book, Court of Silver Flame from the library, to leave Court of Winds and Ruin, and leave Court of Frost and Starlight but would only be shelved behind the librarian desk and only available to check out for students 17 and over.

Troy Decker, Facilities Director, gave a facilities update, and Kristie Garriffa reported on Professional Development.
