On August 28, Ucross Foundation, the artist residency program in northern Wyoming, announced that they are inviting the community to experience “Confluences” through a series of guided sound hikes on the Ucross Ranch this fall.
“Confluences” is an interactive sound exhibition created by Ucross Fellows Teri Rueb and Laurids Sonne and is available via a free downloadable app (iOS and Android) that visitors can run on their mobile phones while walking the land. Voices of the Ucross community, former artist residents, local residents of Clear Creek Valley and field recordings taken in different seasons play as you travel through the landscape.
“We are looking forward to leading this captivating experience that joins art and land with our community,” said Ucross President and Executive Director Caitlin Addlesperger. “Through sound, ‘Confluences’ invites a deeper connection to the artists, ranchers, administrators, historians, ethnobotanists and so many more who make up the Ucross community on this historic 20,000-acre ranch.”
There will be three guided sound hikes: Friday, Sep. 5; Tuesday, Oct. 7; and Monday, Nov. 3. These events are free and open to the public with advance registration required.
On the day of each hike, attendees will meet at the Ucross Art Gallery at 9 a.m. for an introduction and orientation before caravanning to the trail.

Participants should prepare for an intermediate hike up and down hills on the ranch, with longer grass on uneven terrain. Ucross recommends downloading the “Confluences” app before arrival and bringing a set of headphones if available. There will be limited loaner devices and headphones available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Other recommendations include wearing long pants and comfortable hiking shoes. Consider bringing items, such as a hat, sunscreen, bug spray, walking stick, a water bottle and snacks.
The event is free and open to the public, but attendees are asked to register by September 4. Use required registration link. Email info@ucross.org with any questions.
