SPD: the right fit over a quick fix

September 4, 2025

News – Sheridan Media

Sheridan Police Chief Travis Koltiska and Captain Tom Ringley recently spoke with Sheridan Media about manning the force and ensuring officers offered a position are of high character and the right fit for the community.

The department is authorized for 31 full-time sworn officers. Currently, 27 of those positions are filled. Captain Ringley said it would be easy to hire quickly, but stressed that the individual’s character must be the right match for the City of Sheridan.

The standards placed upon SPD are high. Ringley noted that sometimes an applicant may be a qualified officer, but still not the right fit for the job.

To ensure officers have the necessary time to decompress from the stresses of police work, leadership is carefully moving applicants through training, with some just weeks away from hitting the road.

Applicants from across the nation are pursuing careers with SPD, especially since the department adopted remote written testing through the National Testing Network. Once candidates pass the written exam, they travel to Sheridan for the physical fitness assessment and oral board. To learn more, click here.
