Sheridan was in the pink this past weekend, to raise awareness about something that affects 1 out of every 8 women.
The Sheridan Memorial Hospital Foundation held its annual “Link” walk and run event this past Saturday at both Whitney and Kendrick Parks, to raise awareness about breast cancer and raise funds for the Welch Cancer Center.
The American Cancer Society says breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the US, and is the 2nd leading type of cancerous death among women, behind lung cancer.
Depending on what stage of cancer one has, if detected early enough, the 5-year survival rate is as high as 99%.
Jasmine Slater, who is the Development Coordinator for the Foundation, says the event was put on to help promote early detection and prevention through screening.
She adds there’s more resources and support available for a patient going through the cancer treatment process, than one might think.
“That’s really what these funds go towards is supporting families on their journey along with patients and care-takers. Providing that comfort and care for our patients and families so we can keep them here. We have gas cards, if it’s different funds that we can support travel, anyone who is here, just making sure they have comfort while they’re there and just that care at the Welch Cancer Center.”
