Over the last year, the SPD has been refining their recruiting practices to find good candidates with high character who would fit into the culture of the SPD. The SPD Captain said their efforts have become more refined, focusing on individuals they feel would add something to the department.

Recruiting for many industries in Sheridan has been a challenge. One reason is an aging population in Sheridan. The most recent national average for the U.S. population age 65 and older is 18%. According to recent data from the Department of Administration & Information Economic Analysis Division, Sheridan’s 65 and older population is 23%.

The SPD Chief told listeners the average number of open positions within the department is detrimental to operations and staff.

The Chief hopes these recent changes to recruiting procedures will help to alleviate the problem. Through a grant, the SPD contracted with a firm that specializes in police recruiting efforts that are utilized in departments around the nation.
