Wyoming Game and Fish Department Public Information Specialist Christina Schmidt is alerting the public to an ongoing mule deer survey that will continue through January.
Game and Fish wildlife managers are using a professional aerial survey crew to improve mule deer population estimates. The study began Jan. 12 and is scheduled to conclude Jan. 20, with dates subject to change due to weather conditions. Residents may see low-flying helicopters as crews descend to altitudes that allow for clearer observation of mule deer herds.
The survey is being conducted within the Upper Powder River Herd Unit, located west of Interstate 25 between Kaycee and Buffalo. The unit includes Deer Hunt Areas 30, 32, 33, 163 and 169.
C. Schmidt
The goal of the survey is to collect more accurate population data for a variety of wildlife management purposes, including development of 2026 hunting season proposals.
