February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. Advocates with the Sheridan Advocacy and Resource Center are speaking with teens in Sheridan schools about the dangers of teen dating violence and how to recognize unhealthy behaviors.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, teens may view behaviors such as teasing and name-calling as a normal part of a relationship. However, those behaviors can become abusive and escalate into more serious forms of violence. Many teens do not report unhealthy relationships because they fear telling family or friends or feel shame.

Teen dating violence is common. Data from the CDC’s 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicates that among U.S. high school students who reported dating in the previous 12 months, approximately 1 in 12 experienced physical dating violence and approximately 1 in 10 experienced sexual dating violence.

During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Advocacy and Resource Center Assistant Director Rhonda Weber and Executive Director Yvonne Swanson said advocates and leadership stress the importance of presenting this information to students.

Swanson said while conversations about dating and relationships can be difficult for parents and guardians, they are critical. The Sheridan Advocacy and Resource Center can help families start those conversations and provide additional resources. Find contact information by clicking here
