University of Wyoming Marketing and Communications and Public Relations Director Chad Baldwin was recently a guest on our talk show Public Pulse, and discussed the university’s School of Energy Resources’ study where they are looking into finding rare earth minerals in Powder River coal in Wyoming and Montana.

Baldwin gives more details.

Baldwin was asked about the feasibility of rare earth mines adjacent to, or part of existing coal mines in the Powder River Basin.

Baldwin said that would be great news not only for northeast Wyoming, but the entire state, as the mineral industry generates much of the state’s tax revenue.

A new mineral industry would also generate jobs for the state as well.

Although no time frame is known for the rare earth minerals being discovered in coal seams, Baldwin thought it could likely come sooner than later.
