Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter Operations Manager Hannah Edwards and Cat Lead Sue Johnson reminded pet owners to use caution as flea and tick season approaches.
Flea and tick products are available in forms such as shampoos, collars, sprays and spot-on treatments.
Sheridan County Weed and Pest District informed Sheridan Media of several reports of ticks from community members and have encountered numerous ticks while performing spring surveys for weeds, grasshoppers, and mosquitoes.
In Wyoming, fleas are present and can spread in controlled environments but are not as prevalent as more humid states. Ticks are present in the Cowboy State. The Rocky Mountain wood tick and the American dog tick are just two examples that can spread lyme disease to both dogs and cats. Edwards said tall grass and shrubbery are primary hiding spots for ticks.

Edwards advises pet owners to consult veterinarians, use species-appropriate products and monitor animals for any adverse reactions. Key symptoms of lyme disease include sudden shifting-leg lameness, joint pain, fever, and reduced appetite.
Shelter staff say proper seasonal care, including parasite prevention and the shelter’s upcoming vaccination clinics, plays a key role in keeping pets healthy and happy.
