District Court News

On March 12, 2026, the Sheridan Police Department responded to a report of an alleged knife attack at a residence in Sheridan County. Once on scene, SPD Officer Liz Shafer was struck in the head by Beverly Martin while Shafer was attempting to assess the scene. Martin was placed under arrest and booked into the Sheridan County Detention Center. Martin, at an arraignment hearing Thursday, pleaded not guilty to one count of felony interference with a peace officer.

District Court Judge Ben Kirven did not immediately set a date for trial and a pretrial conference, but said that once the matter is set, legal counsel will be notified of the dates. Martin’s bond was continued under the same terms and conditions that were previously set in Sheridan County Circuit Court. If convicted of the alleged crime, Martin faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000, or any combination of both.

Also arraigned Thursday was David Amey of Sheridan. Amey pleaded not guilty to one count of incest for allegedly having sexual relations with a blood relative that resulted in a pregnancy. According to court documents, the investigation began on April 3, 2024 when the SPD responded to a report of an infant death at Sheridan Memorial Hospital.

The child was born premature and died of health complications. A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Amey on March 26, 2026. The alleged criminal activity occurred between June 2023 and August 16, 2023. A trial date was not scheduled during Thursday’s arraignment hearing. Incest is a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to 10,000.
