Eatons’ Guest Ranch horses are making their annual spring journey from the Eatons’ winter pasture near Echeta, Wyoming this weekend. Echeta is not far from Arvada, and Sheridan Media caught up with the trail crew at their first overnight stop on the drive at Leiter.

Melaine Thomas Klier, who owns the Leiter Bar and Cafe, where the horses are pastured and the trail crew stops for the night, said,

The horses are wintered at the Echeta ranch, but in the summer, they go to work on the Historic Eaton’s Guest Ranch, providing a western experience to summer guests from all over the world.

Head Wrangler, Nate Schmeiser, talked about this year’s drive.

When asked how the pasture was, as much of Sheridan County is in a drought, Schmeiser said,

He added that although the fires last year burned some of their cow pasture, it didn’t hurt the horse’s pasture at all.

He said they had a good crew this year on the drive,

Mary Eaton, fifth generation on the Ranch, talked about the drive and the upcoming anniversary of Eaton’s Ranch.

On Saturday night the horses and riders will spend the night near Wyarno, and then on Sunday they will come up Fifth Street past the Sheridan Inn, and Sheridan residents turn out in large numbers to watch them trot through town on their way to the Eaton Ranch in Wolf, Wyoming.

The horse drive is an annual event in Sheridan, and Eatons have been doing it since at least the 1930s.
