During a House Armed Services Committee hearing Wednesday on “Ending the U.S. Military Mission in Afghanistan,” Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney questioned Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley about the consequences of withdrawing forces from Afghanistan.

General Milley has been under scrutiny for remarks he made to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Chinese officials following the January 6 attack on the Capitol. A recently published book by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa outlines steps that Milley took during then-President Trump’s last month in office to prevent the former president from launching nuclear weapons or ordering a military strike against China.
