With less than one month to go before the gates close on motor vehicle traffic, Yellowstone National Park will have its busiest year ever, in terms of number of visitors.

Thanks to a record number of recreational visitors in September, Yellowstone National Park has surpassed its record number of yearly visitors that was last set in 2016.

As of the end of September, more than 4,460,000 visitors have passed though the five entrances to the park.

The old 2016 record was 3,970,000 million visitors.

As for the month of September, there were more than 872,000 visitors, which is a 4% increase from September 2020, and 26% increase from September 2019.

The park is scheduled to close all roads and entrances to motor vehicle traffic for the season on Monday, November 8th, except for the roads connecting the North Entrance to the Northeast Entrance.

All entrances and most of the roads are scheduled to reopen to snowmobile and snow coach traffic on Friday, December 15th.
