Sheridan County added another three lab confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours to the 4,545 lab confirmed cases experienced in the county since the pandemic began.

The county did not add any probable cases. That number stands at 1,393 probable cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

Currently there are 57 active cases in the Sheridan County community, according to COVID-19 Public Information Officer Jennifer Graves.

Five patients are currently hospitalized battling the virus. Sheridan County has experienced the deaths of 61 residents from COVID-19.

The Associated Press reports that more than a year after the vaccine was rolled out, new cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. have soared to their highest level on record at over 265,000 per day on average. The surge has been driven largely by the highly contagious omicron variant. The previous mark was 250,000 cases per day, set in mid-January.

The number of Americans now in the hospital with COVID-19 is running at around 60,000, or about half the figure seen last January. With New Year’s Eve approaching, Dr. Anthony Fauci said there is no need to cancel small home gatherings among vaccinated and boosted family and friends. But the chief medical advisor to the President is strongly recommending against 40- and 50-person parties with lots of hugging and kissing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list Sheridan County’s level of community transmission as HIGH.
