Johnson County is home to one of the most notorious outlaw hideouts, a remote pass near Kaycee and the Big Horn Mountains known as the “Hole-in-the-Wall.”

Many people have kicked at a pretty rock with their feet and found a precious jewel. Others have pulled an old bone from Mother Earth, only to find a dinosaur fossil.

Fort Phil Kearny State Historic Site is located just 20 miles south of Sheridan on Interstate 90, Exit 44. At the Fort location the visitor will find an interpretive center with exhibits, videos, bookstore, and self-guided tours of the fort and outlying sites.

Today, this facility is a state-of-the-art hospital offering both inpatient and outpatient care. However, the stately architecture and lovely grounds from his historic past remain.

Fetterman Battlefield is the site of the U.S. Army’s worst defeat by Plains Indian groups next to the Battle of Little Big Horn. Sent to assist a wagon train in peril, Captain William J. Fetterman was lured by Crazy Horse and other Plains warriors over Lodge Trail Ridge.

Located in Ranchester of I-90, this was the site of the Battle of Tongue River between the Army and the Arapahoe tribe. It was the singlemost important engagement of the Powder River Expedition of 1865, and caused the Arapaho to ally with the Sioux and Cheyenne at the Fetterman Fight a year later.
