As of June 4, the Johnson County Library will be begin reopening on Saturdays after they came up with a plan to use volunteers to help their depleted staff.
Library Director Steve Rzasa said the library began closing on Saturdays due to reduced revenue from the decline in valuation in the county for a number years.
He said the library has seen a nearly 30% reduction in their budget, so the board decided with reduced staff and number of hours to close on Saturdays and stay open later during the week.
The board and staff have come up with a plan to reopen on Saturdays.
Rzasa said the volunteers will be helping by restocking shelves, retrieving books from the drop box, and assisting the public to find books, or who need photocopying, and downloading or printing items off computers.
Rzasa said volunteers will be doing things that would normally take staff away from the front desk so they can keep an eye on the overall operations of the library.
He said, “it’s helping us spread ourselves out a little bit with fewer people.”
The library will begin their Saturday hours on June 4, when they will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
