Due to rising fuel costs, SPD will weigh needs and wants but patrols will not decrease

June 16, 2022

Sheridan Police Department Chief Travis Koltiska told listeners of Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program that the cost of gasoline will force the department to tighten their belt.

According to Koltiska, inflation rates are written into the department’s budget. But the recent increasing cost of gasoline is something that will cause the department to take another look at items and training that would be “nice” to have as opposed to “need” to have for Sheridan’s force.

According to the Chief, he began his budgeting process in February. Referencing the American Automobile Association, the national average price of gas was $3.61 a gallon in late February of 2022. That has soared to $4.82 a gallon in Wyoming, as of publication.

SPD Captain Tom Ringley told listeners it is not unheard of for a patrolling officer to drive over a hundred miles on a single shift, but training in other parts of the nation and state would be their only real concern.

Koltiska said should a worst case scenario arise, reserves are in place. The Chief reassured the public that patrols will not decrease and the services of the department to the community can continue to be counted upon.
