Advocacy and Resource Center will help make a plan

September 7, 2022

The Advocacy and Resource Center of Sheridan is preparing to observe the upcoming month of October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

According to Sheridan Police Department Lieutenant James Hill, over the past five years, the SPD has responded to an average of 117 domestic calls each year. That number is trending downward, according to Hill, with 90 incidents in 2021.

Over those five years, the SPD averaged 56 domestic violence arrests, these arrests are for offenses such as battery, aggravated assault, and strangulation, according to Hill.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Advocacy and Resource Center Executive Director Yvonne Swanson told listeners that the center is still seeing many new clients as well as continuing cases, many caused by the delays within the court systems as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Advocacy and Resource Center has interviewed many people involved in relationships that have become strained in the wake of the pandemic, and those working in the center take a proactive approach to domestic violence prevention. The team will help anyone to create a plan in the event of domestic violence. But according to Swanson, at that stage, many of the people they talk with have already begun developing a plan.

With October being Domestic Awareness Month, The Advocacy and Resource Center is planning a series of events in Sheridan. On Oct. 5, residents can help raise funds and show support by joining in on Bingo at Blacktooth Brewery. October 7, a comedy night fundraiser will be held at the Ramada featuring Mark Bell with Mountain Works Entertainment. The March Against Family Violence will be held on Oct. 8.

Swanson also told listeners that The Advocacy and Resource Center has opened an office to help local college students.
