The House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol held their final public hearing Monday and issued its final report to Congress on the investigation. Following an 18-month investigation, the Committee announced four criminal referrals to the Department of Justice against former President Donald Trump that include conspiracy to defraud the United States, obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to make a false statement and inciting an insurrection.

Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY), Vice-Chair of the January 6 Committee, said every president in our history has defended the orderly transfer of authority, except one. She said January 6, 2021 was the first time an American President refused his Constitutional duty to transfer power peacefully to the next.

Cheney said the former president chose to do nothing while his supporters stormed the Capitol – delaying the election certification process.

Cheney said the Committee recognizes that their work has only begun; it’s only the initial step in addressing President Trump’s effort to remain in office illegally. Prosecutors are considering the implications of the conduct that the Committee described in their report, as are citizens all across our nation.
