On Sunday, February 12, the Trail End State Historic Site hosted a good old-fashioned Family Sled Day on the east lawn at the Kendrick Mansion.
Sharie Shada, Superintendent of Trail End State Historic Site, said about the event.
“We had a great morning! 60 people came out to sled, and both children and adults alike went down the hill. This is the first event for the Wyo Winter Rodeo week, and the Wyoming Office of Outdoor Recreation was there too, promoting state parks and outdoor recreation opportunities.”
Refreshments included hot chocolate and s’mores.
When the Kendrick’s lived at Trail End mainly during the 1920’s, sledding was a fun winter past time for kids.
The Flexible Flyer and other runner sleds were popular Christmas gifts for both boys and girls. Sleds cost between $3 and $5 in 1920, which is equivalent to around $70 in today’s money. Today, saucer sleds and plastic toboggans were more the order of the day.
