A weather pattern that has occurred for the past 1½ years has recently ended, and that may explain why there was so much snow throughout Wyoming this winter.

Weather experts say when a La Nina weather pattern happens, the northwest US tends to see cooler and wetter weather.

As of about one-month ago, the National Weather Service says that the weather pattern ended, and things shifted to a neutral pattern.

Todd Chambers with the National Weather Service Office in Billings, Montana, says there were clues about the shift in weather patterns.

“This La Nina acted actually more like an El Nino scenario for most of the western half of the United States. The system brought a bunch of Pacific moisture into our area, so our snowpack in our mountains and especially this time of year in our foothills is well above normal. We’re looking at about 200% of our normal snowpack there on the east side of the Big Horn Mountains of Sheridan.”

While it is early, some weather analysts are investigating if an El Nino weather pattern will happen in the summer and fall.

This could mean warmer and dryer weather than normal.
