In September of 2022, Game and Fish confirmed the discovery of Asian clams in Glendo Reservoir, an aquatic invasive species that could have ecological impacts in the future. That same year it was discovered zebra mussels had made it into Pactola Reservoir, located 13 miles west of Rapid City, S. D., in the Black Hills. The reservoir is just 27 miles from the Wyoming border and is a popular boating destination for Wyoming and South Dakota residents.

During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Wyoming Game and Fish Sheridan Region Public Information Specialist Christina Schmidt told listeners that she feels optimistic the efforts of the Game and Fish and the public will keep the AIS out of Wyoming waters.

AIS check stations are open and operating. The Game and Fish has expanded operations to protect areas that may have a greater risk of introduction.

Game and Fish reminds the public, all watercraft traveling into Wyoming from March 1 – Nov. 30, must be inspected prior to launching in Wyoming. The public also must stop at any open AIS check station they pass with their watercraft while traveling to or from their boating destination.
