An incident that happened in the overnight hours on August 9 with the regional 9-1-1 system going down has prompted Johnson County Emergency Management Coordinator Marilyn Connolly to look at possible changes in the Code Red Alert notifications.

She explained to the county commission what happened at their last meeting.

Connolly said she, the Buffalo Police Chief and dispatch will be discussing implementing different protocols to send out the Code Red Alerts, including timing of and possibly waiting on the second calls until morning.

Connolly said she also has the option of using the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS), which is a Federal call-out system through FEMA, that is capable of sending message alerts to all cellular phones instead of calling cellular and land lines with notifications.

According to discussions at the meeting, the problem occurred due to a issue with an internet provider that shut down the 9-1-1 systems in Sheridan, Campbell, and Johnson Counties that night, which prompted the alert going out.
