Dear Parents and Students,
In collaboration with our local law enforcement, we want to emphasize the importance of bike safety for our children in town. Recently, our community has experienced an increase in bike accidents, primarily due to riders not stopping or checking for cars when crossing streets. To ensure the safety of our young cyclists, please remind your children to follow these essential guidelines when riding their bikes:
Stop, Look, and Listen: Bike riders should always come to a complete stop at intersections and crosswalks. They should look both ways for oncoming traffic, make eye contact with drivers if possible, and listen for any approaching vehicles.
Obey Traffic Signals and Signs: Emphasize the importance of obeying traffic signals, stop signs, and all road signs. Just like motorists, bikers must follow these rules to stay safe.
Use Hand Signals: Encourage your children to use hand signals to indicate their intentions when turning or stopping. This helps drivers understand their actions in advance.
Wear Proper Safety Gear: It recommended anyone riding a bike wears a well-fitted helmet at all times. Bright, reflective clothing makes them more visible to drivers, especially during low-light conditions.
Stay in Designated Bike Lanes: Whenever possible, use designated bike lanes or paths. If none are available, remind your child to stay as far to the right as possible when riding on the road.
Avoid Distractions: Stress the importance of focusing solely on riding while on their bikes.
Discourage using headphones, mobile phones, or any distractions that could divert their attention from the road.
Be Predictable: Teach your children to ride in a straight line, not to swerve in and out of traffic. Predictable behavior makes it easier for drivers to anticipate their movements.
Ride With Traffic: Remind your kids to ride in the same direction as traffic, not against it. This reduces the risk of collisions with vehicles at intersections.
Buddy System: Encourage your child to ride with a friend or in a group when possible. There is safety in numbers, and it’s easier for drivers to notice a group of cyclists.
Regular Maintenance: Regularly check brakes, tires, and lights to ensure they function correctly.
By following these guidelines, we can collectively promote bike safety in our community and reduce the number of accidents. Let’s work together to keep our children safe while enjoying the benefits of biking in our town. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to the safety of our young riders.
Sincerely,
Charles Auzqui, Superintendent
Sean Bissett, Chief of Police
