In front of a packed crowd at the Whitney Rink at the M&M Center in Sheridan, Wyoming, the Sheridan Lady Hawks delivered a commanding performance in the state hockey tournament with a 7-1 win over Cody on Saturday.
Despite a penalty for body contact in the opening minute, the Lady Hawks set the tone, outshooting Cody 15 to 7 in a goalless first period. Sheridan outshot Cody 15 to 7 in the initial period, which ended without any goals.
Sheridan broke the ice four minutes into the second period with #40 Merrit Haswell scoring the opening goal. The lead was then doubled by #48 Riley Mudd 10 minutes into the period, followed by #37 Mckena Bales who widened the gap to 3-0 with a goal five minutes before the second intermission. Bales continued her scoring run, landing her second goal of the match with 1 minute 46 seconds remaining in the second period.
Entering the third period, the Lady Hawks had accumulated a commanding lead and a shot count of 36 to Cody’s 9. Merritt Haswell and Willow Koltiska added to the tally early in the third, with goals that brought the score to 6-0. The game saw multiple players from both teams sent to the penalty box as tensions rose. Cody managed to score late in the third period, preventing a shutout.
Despite a late goal from Cody, the Lady Hawks maintained their dominance. Riley Mudd netted her second goal of the match four minutes before the conclusion, sealing a 7-1 victory. This win not only guarantees the Lady Hawks a place in Sunday’s noon championship game at the M&M Center in Sheridan but also has Sheridan fans eagerly planning to pack the arena in support.
