Sheridan Army Veteran Carl Morton recently placed third in the 2023 National Veterans Creative Arts Competition for a ceramic sculpture he created titled “Revelation, Smitty Isn’t a Jug.” Morton’s recognition was part of a process that began with more than 6,000 entries from nearly 3,000 Veterans in 125 VAs across the country. According to a media release from the Sheridan VA, Morton’s involvement started when he submitted the sculpture to the Sheridan VA Health Care System local competition last year, which is co-hosted by the local American Legion Auxiliary. However, he is quick to credit Sheridan College with providing the foundation for his skills.

The local competition included a total of 19 entries, representing a variety of creative categories. Morton’s work was one of 14 entries that placed first, so VA staff submitted it to a national review board, along with all the other Veterans who won first place in their respective categories. VA staff were recently notified that his sculpture placed third nationally. Veterans who are interested in learning more about the annual competition are encouraged to visit here.
