In the Spring of this year, the Sheridan chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) began hosting Creative Connections: Conversations on Metal Wellness right here in Sheridan.

NAMI board president Terri Markham and vice president Rita Geary made an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss the launch of two peer support groups that will be held in Sheridan.

One of these support groups has been developed for parents of youth who have experienced trauma. The other support group is for teens who have gone through similar traumatic experiences.

Although facilitators will be present to help guide the conversations, both of these groups are led by the attendees. These peer groups are designed to allow those attending to share experiences and questions with each other.

Markham said there is a strong emphasis placed on the confidentiality of group members. The support groups are a place to help facilitate healing and learning how to handle tough situations.

The teen support group has been developed in the same manner. Allowing for a safe non judgemental space so teens can help each other.

Both groups will meet beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 8, at the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church located at 1 South Tschirgi St.

Each group will meet in a different location within the church and the meetings are not religion oriented. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church has been gracious enough to provide a safe meeting place. Light snacks will be provided.
