The SCSD#1 Board of Trustees met on Tuesday, Jan. 21, with several items on the agenda. The board adjourned the regular meeting briefly and entered into a public hearing for the alternative schedule. The public was encouraged to comment on the four-day school week, which SDSC#1 currently has in place.
Chairman Clint Krumm said that the four-day week was about the most popular thing they have done in the district. “There is 98% approval for the four-day school week,” he added. They are one of two schools in Sheridan County who have the four-day week, Arvada-Clearmont being the other one.
One parent, Shelta Rambur, commented, saying that she liked the four-day week, and gave her daughter more time to volunteer.
Krumm said when it started in the 1980s, it was not popular, but today most parents and staff like the schedule.
The board then returned to the regular meeting.
In recognitions, the board recognized the Big Horn High School Football team, winners of the state football championship. Head Coach Kirk McLaughlin had this to say about his team.
Although the entire team didn’t come to the meeting McLaughlin said he felt that they were taking up enough space as it was.
He said that some of the senior football players plan to go on to play college football as well. He said the senior leadership for the team was outstanding this year. Big Horn had the second ever sophomore in Wyoming to be first in the state in all classifications.
The board also recognized the BHHS Drama team. Dustin Olson, head drama coach, speech coach and music teacher at BHHS, talked about their “Three-peat” year.
Stephanie Aitchison, BHHS Job Coach, talked about the mock interview day, saying they have a lot of interest in the program. Each student tells them three careers that interest them, and they try to match them with someone in the field who is willing to do 15-minute interviews with the students.
“We have a lot of participation in this event,” she said. She added that 111 local organizations participated in the day.
In other business the board voted to renew the Superintendent contract for Dr. Jeff Jones and approved the addition of a VoAg/FFA program at BHHS, to start in the fall of 2025. Jones said they would begin advertising for a teacher right away.
The board also voted to hire a school psychologist and approved the pay schedule for their salary. It was mentioned that the funding comes through the government as a part of the special needs students funding.
Next meeting will be on Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Central Office in Ranchester.
