Scammers prey on support for law enforcement

News – Sheridan Media

Phone scammers are once again using the community’s support of law enforcement in an attempt to defraud Sheridan residents.

The Sheridan Police Department has utilized social media and told Sheridan Media they have received multiple calls from residents reporting scam calls claiming to be raising funds to purchase duty vests for the law enforcement in Sheridan County.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, SPD Captain Tom Ringley told listeners law enforcement agencies budget for replacement vests and will never, under any circumstances, solicit funds from the public.

The SPD Captain said residents in the city and the county express their gratitude to local law enforcement often and he appreciates the support. But he also understands this gratitude can be taken advantage of by bad actors and scammers.

According to Ringley, law enforcement accepting money from named donors in the community can lead to what he defines as “unforced errors.”

Anonymous donations are accepted by the SPD to fund the Christmas Season “Shop with a cop” program, but are never solicited.

The Captain took the opportunity to remind the community that SPD Officer Elizabeth Shafer presents updated scam briefings with the most up to date information available to the SPD at 11 a.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the HUB on Smith. Officer Shafer’s informational presentations are free and open to the public.
