May is small business month, an opportunity to support and celebrate the many locally owned and operated small businesses that make up communities.
Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer Teresa Detimore said she witnessed first-hand the value of small businesses to a community and how a community can come together to ensure those businesses survive, especially during hard times.

According to the Small Business Administration, most businesses in the US are small. Small Businesses account for 99.9% of American businesses. There are over 33.1 million small businesses in the United States.
The administration reports that small businesses employ 61.7 million Americans, totaling just over 46% of private sector employees. From 1995 to 2021, small businesses created 17.3 million net new jobs, accounting for approximately 63% of net jobs created since 1995. Small businesses pay 39% percent of private sector payroll. Small businesses generate approximately 33% percent of known export value.
Detimore, all the staff at the Sheridan Chamber of Commerce and Sheridan Media ask that the community join in thanking small businesses for serving as the heart and soul of the community, and as always, shop local and support local businesses.
Other ways that locals can support small businesses include joining loyalty clubs – often receiving special deals in the process, sharing local business social media posts, spreading the news of small businesses by word of mouth, attending events sponsored by small businesses and by leaving positive reviews on internet search engines.
