The second part of the Working Lands Collaborative workshop series Facing the Fire will take place on Tuesday, June 24.
The Working Lands Collaborative and the workshop series was developed for and by the people and organizations that work with the lands in the Sheridan Region.
Sheridan County Conservation District Executive Director Carrie Rogaczewski and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service District Conservationist Andrew Cassiday have said the wildfire season of 2024 led many landowners and stakeholders to seek information on the impacts of wildfires on working lands and the producers that manage those landscapes. To assist in this matter, the Facing the Fire Working Lands Workshop was developed and split into classroom and field day portions.
The 2025 workshop, Facing the Fire held the classroom portion of the workshop back in March. The Facing the Fire Field Day Working Lands Workshop Part II will begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 24.
At 8:30 a.m., participants will meet at SR Cattle Company at 758 Badger Creek Rd. and should plan on 45-55 minutes travel time from Sheridan. Coffee and light refreshments will be available.
The introduction will cover grazing, adaptive management and Reframing How We Think About Fire. The group will then combine into fewer vehicles and travel to different sites on property.
Site visits will include discussions on rangeland fire response on wildfire site vs prescribed fire site, invasive annual grass treatments (chemical), leafy spurge treatments (biological), a reclaimed prairie dog town and restoration considerations.
The group will then return to the start location for a brown bag lunch provided by Main Catering. While there, additional discussions and information will be presented on House Draw Fire recovery efforts, sagebrush seeding, and more.
Participants are encouraged to engage in open discussion on their experiences with fire, management, etc. Participants are also welcome to bring photos if they’d like to show what they’ve been doing on their own property.
To conclude, final site visits may include the Badger Creek Fire and native seeding sites.
Standard registration is $30, and any students are free to attend. To register for this event and learn more, click here.
