Buffalo is known for its old west flavor. There is the Occidental, a historic hotel, the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum, with area history, and statues commemorating the Indian Wars and the Johnson County Range War. Adding to the old west feel is the new Moon Hitch Wagon Rides, a horse drawn covered wagon offering several different rides in and around the town of Buffalo.

Riding in a wagon is a relaxing, unique way to see the town of Buffalo, and hear about the history while re-living some of it. The clip-clop of the horse’s hooves is a soothing sound on the quiet Buffalo back streets.

Owner Ashlee Kintzler talks about the wagon rides, saying she has been driving horse teams off and on for about 20 years, starting when she was 13 years old.

She is originally from the Riverton – Pallivon area and has been in Buffalo for three years.

When asked what prompted her to start the Moon Hitch Wagon ride, she said it was born out of a family heritage and love of driving teams. She said her grandmother installed in her a love for horses, especially paint horses. She named her business Dorothy Mae Stables, honoring her grandparents and started the Moon Hitch Wagon business to honor her father, who is still living.

She said she started the business on paper in February, and had a soft start due to the Wyoming spring weather. She talked about some of the unique rides that she offers to tourists and locals. On Thursdays, they offer history tours.

That experience is approximately 2 hours long, depending on how long one wants to spend enjoying lunch. Pre-registration is required. Go to Moon Hitch Wagon Company on Facebook. Fridays-Mondays they offer the Mountain Plains Heritage Park Tours.

She talked about a special feature of the Heritage Park Tours.

Kintzler said she has two teams, the paint team shown in the photos, and her father’s team of Percheron Molly Mules.

She said that with a lot going on during the summer, she felt they needed two teams for the wagon. She added she would also like to thank her generous sponsors for making the Moon Hitch Wagon Rides a reality. Her wagon has seating for 10 people, and it is available for special events.
