Sheridan County Weed and Pest (SCWP) will conduct an aerial mosquito larvicide application on Monday and Tuesday, July 7–8. This is the second of three planned treatments for the summer. During the operation, residents may notice a low-flying fixed-wing aircraft along local rivers and streams.
According to Assistant Supervisor Brian Songer, SCWP has received multiple reports of elevated mosquito activity in the Big Goose and Tongue River drainages. SCWP monitors mosquito breeding sites across the county and uses recorded larvae counts to determine the optimal timing for treatments.
The larvicide targets several mosquito species, but the primary focus is on Culex tarsalis, a species known to transmit West Nile Virus (WNV) to humans, horses, and birds. Although no WNV cases have been confirmed in Sheridan County this year, the virus has been detected in Natrona, Laramie, and Albany counties, with two birds testing positive in Albany County.
SCWP coordinates mosquito control efforts with the City of Sheridan and the Towns of Ranchester, Dayton, and Clearmont to help reduce mosquito populations and the risk of disease transmission.
