Many families have one or more children that have had to be told to get out of a tree or stop climbing on the furniture. The Sheridan County YMCA now has a club that can direct that adventuring spirit in a positive direction.

The YMCA Kid’s Climbing Club utilizes the climbing walls and safety measures at the Y and teaches your little adventurer the proper techniques and safety needed to summit many of life’s challenges.

YMCA Executive Director Liz Cassiday said the program seeks to grow healthy minds and bodies in children while the Bighorn Mountains may, one day, provide the spiritual side.

Research published in the National Library of Medicine reports that climbing delivers whole-body, moderate-to-vigorous exercise that builds cardiorespiratory fitness and muscular endurance. A randomized controlled trial found bouldering psychotherapy was not inferior to group cognitive behavioral therapy for reducing depressive symptoms, and lab studies show indoor climbing elicits substantial aerobic demand, making it a strong choice for body and mind.

The YMCA Kids Climbing Club offers monthlong sessions where kids learn skills, play games and build confidence in a supportive setting. All equipment is provided; no experience necessary. For details, contact the Sheridan County YMCA at 307-674-7488.
