On February 10, SCSD#2 invited the community to give their feedback about bills that are being addressed in the Wyoming Legislature that could affect SCSD#2.

Many community members attended to the session, shared some concerns and filled out sticky notes for the board members to know what concerns are important to them.

SCSD#2 Board Chairman Shane Rader welcomed the crowd.

He talked about how to contact the legislators. He said that to find their phone and email contacts go to wyoleg.gov. “Don’t go to the dot com one, it will take you to somewhere else. Make sure it is dot gov.” Rader said.

He added that sometimes it was helpful to text a legislator and let them know an email is being sent.

Superintendent Scott Stults talked about various bills that were be discussed this session.

“Public education matters,” Stults said. “The education your children get is what this is about. If we just follow the process, things don’t always work out as we hoped. Being informed and educated and being active is critically important.”

He talked about re-calibration, and the committee that is a select committee to evaluate the funding model that is being used to fund education.

Stults also talked about the block grant, and how it was a good model for SCSD#2, because it gave them more local control and more flexibility with funding.

The attendees broke off into small groups to discuss the bills and decide what they wanted the legislators to know from Sheridan. Many said they had contacted their legislators with their concerns.

Community member Richard Shackelford, who was a teacher for a time, made this comment,

Chairman Rader wanted to thank those who came out again for the conversations.

Rich Cullen attended the session and had this to add,

There was a handout available for those attending showing the current bills before the legislature, including HB0010, Sexually explicit materials in libraries-requirements for county and school libraries governing access by minors; HB0096, Concealed Carry weapons age requirements;SF0035, school cell phone and smart watch policies; and HB0110, on public school financing, which died in the house but could still be under consideration in the Senate. These are posted on-line at wyoleg.gov.

Anyone with a concern is urged to contact their legislators.
