Sheridan College’s Annual Student Juried Exhibition will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, in the Edward A. Whitney Gallery at the Whitney Center for the Arts. Refreshments will be provided during the reception.
This exhibition is held each spring and is open to all art students and majors. The event is free, and the college invites the community, as well as students’ friends and family to attend.
According to Sheridan College Art Instructor David Brock, students from all majors submit a minimum of three of their best pieces created during their time at the college. He noted that that some submissions are made in class, while some are created independently. Scholarship students are required to submit four works. In addition to submitting their work, students are responsible for installing it, including setting, hanging and lighting, to gain experience in all aspects of the field.
This semester’s exhibition will be juried by Peytin Fitzgerald, a printmaker and Sheridan College alum who earned and MFA from Illinois State University. Fitzgerald is currently a residency assistant at the Jentel Artist Residency.
A brief award ceremony will recognize “Best of Show”, second place and third place as selected by Fitzgerald. In addition, a Salon de Refuse`s will be on view in the Neltje Student Gallery, located on the second floor of the Whitney Center for the Arts. Salon de Refuse`s is French for “exhibition of the rejected,” a tradition dating back to the 1800s that showcases works not selected by an official jury. Many notable artists and works debuted in such exhibitions, including Édouard Manet’s “Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe” (The Luncheon on the Grass). Attendees will have the opportunity to peruse theses works and cast their vote for a People’s Choice Award.
“This event is the highlight of the year for the art department.” Brock said. “Students get to showcase the work they’ve done during their time here, work in a professional capacity by selecting and displaying their pieces, and interact with outside professionals. We are excited to celebrate their wonderful accomplishments with their families, peers and the community.”
