This summer, the Big Horn City Historical Society (BHCHS) will dedicate and erect a plaque on the “French Pete Site” near Banner.
While recent guests on our talk show Public Pulse, BHCHS President Mike Kuzara and Vice-President Judy Slack talked about the historical society and planned events coming up this summer.
Kuzara talks about the French Pete site and why it is historically relevant.
According to the BHCHS, trader “French Pete,” (Louis Gazous) and four helpers were murdered by Sioux Indians at the site in 1866.
Kuzara added there was a desperate fight at the site, but there are no markers or very little information about what happened there.
He would like to see that change.
Slack talked about the dedication ceremony coming up this summer.
The dedication will be the society’s contribution to the United States’ celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and will be offered on Friday, July 17.
