Johnson County’s Commissioners considered a request by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to act as the sponsor for a grant application for a project at the Dry Creek Petrified Tree Environmental Education Area near Buffalo.

Commission Chairman Bill Novotny explained further.

According to Novotny. they plan to submit an application to the Wyoming Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund for roughly $117,000 to upgrade the trail at the recreation area to make it more handicapped accessible and make it easier to travel by the public.

According to blm.gov, the Dry Creek Petrified Tree Environmental Education Area is located about 13 miles east of Buffalo, and offers visitors an opportunity to discover the history of the northeastern Wyoming landscape. About 60 million years ago these red sage hills and sagebrush country were a jungle-like swamp with towering Meta-sequoia trees. Many of these trees still exist as petrified wood.
