Gatchell Museum to Offer Talk on Nellie Tayloe Ross May 20

The Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum in Buffalo will have a talk centering on Nellie Tayloe Ross on May 20 at the museum.

According to a release, the presentation will be made by Rick Ewig, a former instructor of Public History and associate director of the University of Wyoming’s American Heritage Center.

He holds a master’s degree in history from UW, and was the past editor of the state historical journal, Annals of Wyoming, and was past president of the Wyoming Historical Society.

The talk will feature Nellie Tayloe Ross, Wyoming’s first and only woman governor, elected in 1925, and who was also the first woman in the country to serve as governor.

She was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as Director of the US Mint in 1933, which she held for 20 years.

She died in 1977 at the age of 101.

The presentation will be offered on Wednesday, May 20 beginning at 5 p.m. in the Carriage House at the museum.
