In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. National Police Week offers honor, remembrance, and peer support, while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay homage to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. Sheridan Police Chief Travis Koltiska read a proclamation at the recent Sheridan City Council business meeting, designating May 10 to May 16 as Police Appreciation Week in Sheridan and May 15 as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day. Prior to reading the proclamation, Chief Koltiska provided some statistics.

Sergeant Nevada Krinkee was honored last year during National Police Week memorial events in Washington D.C. and Koltiska said they are sending two officers this year to represent the Sheridan Police Department during memorial events honoring fallen officers from across the country.
