On February 16, 2026, the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office received a report involving the possible sexual abuse of a minor. A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Ross Nutter of Sheridan. Nutter, pursuant to the terms of a plea agreement reached with the State, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree and one count of sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree.
The State is recommending a prison sentence of 8 to 18 years for each of the two second degree charges, and 8 to 15 years on the third degree charge. All of the sentences would run concurrent to one another. A convicted violent felon changed his plea on a number of charges at a hearing Thursday in Fourth Judicial District Court in Sheridan. Pursuant to the terms of a plea agreement reached with the State, 19-year-old Ranal Crable pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a violent felon, one count of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance – marijuana, and one count of misdemeanor interference with a peace officer.
The State is recommending a 2 to 3 year prison sentence for the felony firearm possession charge, and 180 days in jail for each of the two misdemeanor charges and to run the sentences concurrent to one another. According to court documents, on March 2, 2026, a trooper with the Wyoming Highway Patrol initiated a traffic stop on Highland Avenue near the intersection of West 5th Street for speeding. Crable was a passenger in the backseat of the vehicle and was in possession of the firearm. He gave the trooper a false ID, which resulted in the interference charge. Crable is being prosecuted as a violent felon because he was convicted on December 16, 2025 in Madison County, Montana for assault with a weapon.
District Court Judge Darci Phillips ordered that a presentence investigation report be completed by Probation and Parole and scheduled sentencing for October 20 at 9 am. Crable’s bond was revoked and he was remanded to the custody of the Sheridan County Detention Center pending sentencing.
