Stella and Clarence Montano have been selected by AARP to receive the 2026 AARP Wyoming Andrus Award for Community Service, the Association’s most prestigious and visible state volunteer award for community service.
Wyoming residents overwhelmingly selected Stella and Clarence Montano for their combined remarkable service, which has greatly benefited the Wyoming community, reflected AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers.
The Andrus Award will be formally presented to Stella and Clarence Montano at a ceremony on October 1, 2026, at Altitude Chophouse & Brewery in Laramie.
“This award acts as a symbol to the public that we can all work together for positive social change,” says Ann Clement, AARP Wyoming State Director. “AARP has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions volunteers make to their communities, neighbors, and the programs they serve.”
The Montano’s moved to Sheridan in 1994 and haven’t stopped giving back since.
Clarence spent three years on active duty in the Army before giving another 10 years in the reserves.
He then spent almost 30 years working in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Stella worked 12 years for Sheridan Memorial Hospital before moving to The Hub on Smith (the community’s senior center) for another 13.
The couple celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in August 2026.
A true pillar of Sheridan and Wyoming, Stella is deeply involved in local service and leadership—serving in roles such as Chamber Ambassador and in leadership with the Sheridan County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary (President), as well as Life Link of Sheridan County.
“I know both of us are honored, and I know that isn’t why we volunteer,” said Stella. “AARP gives me a lot. It gives me a vehicle to do the work that I love doing with volunteers. I think that is where it started with me, and believing in what AARP does.”
They each have favorite events they like volunteering at – Stella enjoys the document shredding and caregiver events.
Clarence likes the Christmas Stroll in Sheridan, pointing out that Christmas is for kids, but when you hand a candy cane to a parent or grandparent, their face lights up just as much.
According to Clarence, “There is nothing neater than being at an event, and someone says thank you. It just makes you feel good. It is better than a paycheck. Well, almost.”
The Montanos’ nomination was offered by Laurel Rogers, who wrote, “Stella and Clarence Montano have spent years improving the lives of older adults, caregivers, veterans, families, and neighbors throughout Sheridan County and Wyoming. Together, they have built a legacy of service that extends far beyond any single organization or program.”

Recipients across Wyoming were chosen for their ability to enhance the lives of AARP members and prospective members, improve their communities and inspire others to volunteer.
About the Award:
The Andrus Award is named for AARP Founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a retired high school principal, and is AARP’s most prestigious and visible volunteer award.
It recognizes individuals who share their experience, talent, and skills to enrich their communities in ways consistent with AARP’s purpose, vision, and commitment to volunteer service, and who inspire others to volunteer.
